The BMW F10/F11/F07/F18 is the sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series, which was produced from 2010 to 2017.[5][6] The body styles of the range are:
- 4-door sedan (F10)
- 5-door wagon (F11, marketed as 'Touring')
- 5-door fastback (F07, marketed as 'Gran Turismo')
- 4-door long wheelbase sedan (F18, sold only in China, Mexico and the Middle East)
The F07 Gran Turismo is the only 5 Series to date that has been produced in a fastback body style. The F10 is also the first 5 Series to offer a hybrid drivetrain, a turbocharged V8 engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission, a dual-clutch transmission (in the M5), active rear-wheel steering (called 'Integral Active Steering'), electric power steering, double-wishbone front suspension, an LCD instrument cluster (called 'Black Panel Display') and automatic parking (called 'Parking Assistant').[7]
The F10 M5, introduced in 2011, is powered by the S63 twin-turbocharged V8 engine coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. It is the first M5 to use a forced induction engine.
In February 2017, the F10 was replaced by the G30 5 Series.[8]

Development[edit]
From November 2005 to December 2006, the exterior was designed by Jacek Fröhlich under the leadership of BMW Group Design Director Adrian van Hooydonk.[9][10] The Touring version was designed by Jean-Francois Alexandre Huet.[11]
The F10 was unveiled in Munich on 23 November 2009.[12]

Sedan (F10)[edit]
The sedan was the first body style to be released. It was unveiled at the Munich Olympic Stadium in 2009.[13]
Touring (F11)[edit]
The Touring model was unveiled at the 2010 Leipzig Auto Show.[14]
Gran Turismo (F07)[edit]
The 5 Series Gran Turismo is a 5-door fastback body style. It is longer and taller than the 5 Series sedan/Touring models, and has a hatchback rear door.[15] The hatchback has a dual-access opening and the side windows are frameless.[16][17]
Although sold as part of the 5 Series range, is suggested that the Gran Turismo chassis has more in common with the F01 7 Series[18] and the fascia is more similar to the 7 Series than the 5 Series. The additional length results in more legroom for rear passengers.[19]
In some markets (such as the Canada and the United States), the Gran Turismo was launched before sedan and Touring models of the F10/F11 generation. Therefore, in these markets it was sold alongside the outgoing E60 5 Series until the release of the F10/F11 models.[20]
The F07 535i GT was the first model to use the N55 turbocharged straight-six engine, which replaced the N54.[21][22]
Long wheelbase sedan (F18)[edit]
A long wheelbase (LWB) version of the BMW 5 Series Sedan was developed for the Chinese market, as a cheaper alternative to the 7 Series which is longer and wider. The wheelbase of the F18 is extended by 14 cm (5.5 in) over the standard 5 Series sedan.[23]
The LWB 5 Series was assembled at BMW Plant Shenyang in Shenyang, China plant for the Chinese market.[24]
Styling[edit]
The F10 uses a more traditional BMW exterior styling approach compared with the controversial styling of its E60 5 Series predecessor.[25] The 'Bangle butt' is removed,[26] a Hofmeister kink is present,[27] a traditional kidney grill is used and crease lines are used on the bonnet (similar to the E39 5 Series and earlier generations).[28] Reviews of the styling have ranged from slightly bland, to handsome and muscular.[25][27][29][30][31]
The interior features an updated iDrive system[32] and a 13 mm (0.5 in) increase in rear knee-room for rear passengers.[27] The F10 saw the return of the centre console being angled towards the driver,[33][34] as used on the 5 Series from 1981 to 2003.
Engines[edit]
Petrol[edit]
In Europe, the naturally aspirated six-cylinder models used the direct-injection N53 engine. However, many countries outside Europe continued to use the older N52 engine instead, due to high sulfur levels in the locally available petrol.

Drivetrain[edit]
Transmission options for the model range (excluding the M5) were a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed ZF 8HPautomatic. The M5 uses a 7-speed dual clutch transmission or a conventional 6-speed manual.
Chassis and suspension[edit]
The F10 uses the same platform as the F01 7 Series.[49][50] Front suspension is double wishbone with double-pivot lower arms (previous 5 Series generations used Macpherson struts).[27][51] Rear suspension is a multi-link design with 5 links called 'Integral V'.[25]
Most suspension components are made from aluminium. The chassis is constructed from various grades of steel and the body is 55% stiffer than its E60 predecessor.[27] Compared with the aluminium front structure used by the E60, the F10's steel components are heavier but cheaper to produce and repair.[52] To reduce weight, the bonnet, front fenders and doors are made from aluminium.[27]
The rear-wheel drive version of the 2011 535i has a rollover risk of 9.3% and a 5 of 5 stars overall safety rating.[53]
M5 model[edit]
The F10 M5 was previewed by the BMW Concept M5, which was unveiled at Auto Shanghai in April 2011.[54]The production version was unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.[55]
Produced solely in the sedan/saloon body style, the F10 M5 is powered by a high output variant of the BMW S63 twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which was first used in the E70 X5 M and E71 X6 M. The S63B44TÜ version used by the M5 has a power output of 412 kW (553 bhp) at 6,000 – 7,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 680 newton metres (500 lb⋅ft) from 1,500 – 5,750 rpm.[56]
To achieve the high power output, the compression ratio was raised from 9.3:1 to 10.0:1 and the boost pressure of the turbochargers was raised from 1.2 bar (17 psi) to 1.5 bar (22 psi).[57] A pulse tuned cross engine exhaust manifold is used.[58] The pistons are strengthened to cope with the added boost and compression. Variable valve lift ('Valvetronic') has also been added to the engine,[57] which is a first for an M engine.[59] The turbochargers are Garrett MGT2260DSL units.[60] The engine has a red-line of 7,200 rpm. Increasingly stringent international CO2 emissions and fuel consumption regulations are cited as the cause of the use of a forced induction V8 engine over the outgoing model's V10 engine, with the new engine cutting CO2 emissions by 25%.[citation needed] Claimed fuel economy is improved 30% over its predecessor.[61]
Acceleration to 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) is achieved in 4.4 seconds,[62] and top speed is limited to 250 kilometres per hour (160 mph). This could be increased to 305 kilometres per hour (190 mph) if the M Driver's Package was selected.[63]
The M5 also uses an 'Active Sound' system that plays a modified engine sound through the car's audio system.[64][65][66]
The Getrag SMG III single-clutch 7-speed semi-automatic transmission of the E60 M5 was replaced by a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic.[67] This is paired with an Active M-Differential with torque vectoring between the rear wheels. In North America, the M5 was available with a 6-speed manual transmission, the only market to be offered this option.[68][69][67]
An Active M-Differential provides torque vectoring between the rear wheels,[70] while the optional 20-inch light alloy wheels are fitted with 265/35/20 front and 295/30/20 rear Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. Three-way adjustment is provided for steering weight, adaptive damping stiffness and throttle response.[71] The rear suspension cradle is mounted directly to the body without any rubber bushings.[72] From March 2013, carbon ceramic disc brakes were available as an option.[73]
In 2014, BMW introduced a 'Competition Package' version, with power output raised to 441 kW (591 bhp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque.[74]
Alpina models[edit]
Alpina produced two variants of the F10/F11 5 Series, the petrol-engined B5 and diesel-engined D5.
B5 Bi-Turbo[edit]
The B5 is based on the 550i and is powered by an Alpina-modified version of the BMW N63 twin-turbo V8 engine. The original B5, which was unveiled at the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed, produced 373 kW (500 bhp) and 700 N⋅m (520 lb⋅ft). The transmission is an 8-speed automatic.[75]
Alpina unveiled an updated B5 at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Power had been uprated to 397 kW (532 bhp) and torque to 730 N⋅m (540 lb⋅ft).[76] During 2015, Alpina sold the B5 Bi-Turbo Edition 50, which marked the company's 50th year in operation. The Edition 50 uses an upgraded engine which produces 441 kW (591 bhp) and 800 N⋅m (590 lb⋅ft).[77] The standard B5 received this same engine for the B5's last year of production, 2016.[78][79][80]
D5 Bi-Turbo[edit]
The D5 Bi-Turbo is based on the 535d. It is powered by Alpina-modified version of the BMW N57 turbo straight-6 engine, which produces 257 kW (345 bhp) and 700 N⋅m (520 lb⋅ft).[80]
Special models[edit]
530Le (China only)[edit]
The 530Le is a plug-in hybrid version F18 long-wheelbase sedan, which was produced solely for the Chinese market.[81]
It was unveiled at the 2014 Guangzhou Auto Show. It was powered by BMW's 160 kW (210 bhp) N20 working in conjunction with an electric motor with a maximum output of 70 kW. In pure-electric mode the 530Le can reach a maximum speed of 120 km/h (75 mph) and has a maximum range of 58 km (36 mi). Combined fuel consumption is 2.1 litres/100 km.[82]
ActiveHybrid 5[edit]
The ActiveHybrid is a hybrid version of the 5 Series based on the 535i Sedan. It was previewed by the Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show[83] and produced from 2011 to 2016.
The production ActiveHybrid 5 features a synchronous electric motor integrated into the housing of the automatic gearbox. This is combined with the turbocharged 3.0 litre straight-six engine from the 535i.[84] The electric motor produces 40 kW (54 bhp) and 210 N⋅m (150 lb⋅ft) of torque. The lithium-ion battery has its own cooling system and has a capacity of 1.35 kWh.[84] Due to the presence of the battery, luggage space is reduced from 520 litres to 375 litres.
Electric-only mode can be used at speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph).[85] The ActiveHybrid 5 includes a start-stop system and a coasting mode.[86] BMW claims the ActiveHybrid 5 is capable of an electric-only range of 4 km (2.5 mi).[87]
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated the 2013 model year ActiveHybrid 5 with a combined fuel economy of 26 mpg‑US (9.0 L/100 km; 31 mpg‑imp), with 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) in the city, and 30 mpg‑US (7.8 L/100 km; 36 mpg‑imp) in highway.[88] The fuel-saving technologies reduces fuel consumption and emissions by more than 10%.[89]
M550d xDrive[edit]
The M550d xDrive is the highest diesel-engined model, and was produced in sedan and Touring body styles. It was a launch model for the 'M Performance' sub-brand – alongside the X5 M50d and X6 M50d – at the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show[90] and was produced until 2016. The M550d is powered by the N57S triple-turbo straight-6 diesel engine. The N57S produces 280 kW (380 bhp) and 740 N⋅m (550 lb⋅ft), resulting in a claimed 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration of 4.7s (4.9s for the Touring). The transmission is a ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic[91] and all models are all-wheel drive ('xDrive').

Specifications[edit]
Platform[edit]
The G30 5 Series utilises BMW's modular Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform[14] first introduced in the 7 Series (G11).[15] The 5 Series' chassis is made from a mixture of different grades of steel and aluminium.[16]
Much of the 5 Series' body panels are constructed of aluminium, including the bonnet, boot lid, roof and doors.[17]
Suspension and steering[edit]
The 5 Series uses double-wishbone front suspension and 5-link rear suspension[14] while Touring models feature self-levelling rear air suspension.[11] Active anti-roll bars (named 'Dynamic Drive') are optional equipment.[18]
All versions of the 5 Series use rack and pinion steering with electric power assistance.[19] 'Integral Active Steering' is an option on some models; and combines electromechanical four-wheel steering and a variable-ratio steering rack.[18][20]
Powertrain[edit]
The 5 Series is offered with a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. It is also offered as a plug-in hybrid.[21]
Up until 2018, 520d models were fitted as standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, while the ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic transmission is optional.[18] All other models, including the 520d xDrive, are exclusively available with the ZF automatic transmission.[22][23]
BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system is optional on some base models and is standard fitment on top-of-the-line models.
Equipment[edit]
Compared with its F10 predecessor, the G30 includes an updated BMW iDrive system with a higher resolution 10.25-inch display, a new heads-up display that covers 70% more area as well as selective anti-dazzle high beam headlights with a range of up to 500 metres.[24] The 5 Series is also available with gesture control, new multi-contour massage seats, and a Driving Assistant Plus package that features lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and a collision warning system.[25]

Special models[edit]
530e iPerformance[edit]
The 530e iPerformance is a plug-in hybrid variant of the 5 Series sedan.[26] It uses a 135 kW (181 hp; 184 PS) turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four engine, in conjunction with a 83 kW (111 hp; 113 PS) electric motor, to produce a combined output of 185 kW (248 hp; 252 PS) and 420 N⋅m (310 lb⋅ft).[27] The 530e has a claimed all-electric range of 50 km (31 mi) under the New European Driving Cycle.[28] The US EPA estimated all-electric range is 16 miles (26 km).[29][30] The electric motor is powered by a 9.2 kWh lithium-ion battery beneath the rear seats.[31]
The 530e iPerformance is offered in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (xDrive) variants.[32]
Alpina[edit]
B5 Bi-Turbo[edit]
The Alpina B5 was introduced at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in all-wheel drive only Saloon and Touring variants.[33] The B5 features a 4.4-litre N63M30 V8 engine[34] that generates a maximum power output of 447 kW (599 hp; 608 PS) and 800 N⋅m (590 lb⋅ft) of torque.[35] Based on the N63B44O2 V8, it has uprated pistons,[36] new twin-scroll Garrett turbochargers[37] and new spark plugs by NGK. The B5 can accelerate from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph), making it the fastest estate car currently in production.[38]
D5 S[edit]
The Alpina D5 S debuted at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show[39] in all-wheel drive only sedan and Touring variants. The D5 S uses a modified 3.0-liter B57D30 diesel inline-six engine. The engine has three turbochargers and produces 285 kW (382 hp; 387 PS) and 800 N⋅m (590 lb⋅ft) of torque in left-hand drive markets, whereas it has two turbochargers and produces 240 kW (322 hp; 326 PS) and 700 N⋅m (516 lb⋅ft) of torque in right-hand drive markets.[40] The left-hand drive D5 S saloon has a top speed of 286 km/h (178 mph) and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.4 seconds.[41] Alpina claims it is the fastest diesel-powered production car in the world.[42] The right-hand drive, saloon-only version has a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 275 km/h (171 mph).[43]
M5[edit]
The M5, based on the 5 Series (known internally as F90) was announced on 21 August 2017 alongside the Need for Speed Payback video game followed by a public reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2017.[44] The car utilises a 4.4-litre V8 engine producing 441 kW (591 hp; 600 PS) and 750 N⋅m (553 lb⋅ft) of torque, and is the first M5 to feature an automatic gearbox as the sole transmission option,[45] and an all-wheel drive system that can switch between rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive mode.[46] The M5 is initially offered in a 'First Edition' trim that adds a numbered plaque, 20-inch wheels, matte red paint and white leather upholstery.[47] A competition package for the M5 was announced on 9 May 2018. Deliveries of the M5 Competition were expected to begin in September 2018.[48]
